Cyclic AMP, via a specific receptor protein, plays an important role in the regulation of gene expression in bacteria: it is involved in the positive regulation of some catabolic-sensitive operons and it is required for the control of natural polarity in polycistronic operons. In parallel with other metabolic signals controlling coordinate expressions of suich operons (see preceding article, TIBS, Feb., 1980, 51–53) cAMP and its receptor protein might behave as a general modulator of gene dosage, through modulation of transcription termination efficiency.
